sandspider
Well, I bought a cheap Savage 77F pump shotgun earlier today (see my other post - optimistically asking about stripping and cleaning it!) However, it has (or I have) a problem. It has real difficulty getting the cartridge(s) out of the mag and into the chamber. I initially thought it was the cartridge retaining spring letting go too easily, but now I've figured out how I think it should work, I don't think that's the problem. It pumped fine a few times with one cart in the chamber and one in the mag, but when I tried to put two in the mag the first one out of the mag always jammed. Now it jams with just one in the mag too... The cartridge in the mag pops out, but only a little way (all the brass head showing), not to the back of the ramp that lifts and injects the cartridge into the chamber when the pump is pushed forward. If I try and pull the pump further back, the cartridge jams, I think against the ramp (it pushes the ramp downwards) rather than sliding along the top of the ramp. I then have to force the action forward again, push up the ramp with my finger and wiggle the cartridge out below it. I phoned the shop where I bought it, and they said I could take it back to them, or try bending the magazine retaining pin out a little further. However, I don't think the pin is the problem any more, and I really don't want to have to drive all the way to the gunshop and back again. (It's more than an hour away). My only local gun shop is pricey and this gun is too old and cheap. But I'd still like it to work! It's my first pump action, so it's possible that I'm being a numpty. I've tried different length cartridges (65 67 and 70mm, it's a 3" chamber), and occasionally it works but not often. It seems to pump fine without any cartridges in the magazine. I've only tried it in my living room so far, so haven't actually been able to fire the round in the chamber. But I don't see how this could make a difference...? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks... And thanks for reading this far, if you made it
alexm
Hi Sandspider, Where in Bristol are you? I could maybe take a look for you if you wanted a second opinion although I wouldn't class myself as an expert by any stretch. Alex
vole
If you find a part that needs replaced, this is where I got similar part for my Savage pump. http://www.gunpartscorp.com/
sandspider
Thanks Vole - I've not found anywhere over here yet that sells Savage parts so could come in useful. Going to get a second opinion on it tomorrow from Alex (thanks mate) and try a strip down and reassembly. Fingers crossed it just needs a minor tweak... The cartridge stop looks right, and all the other bits I could need seem to be there. Nice one. The gun feels nice in the hands and the action is smooth - tomorrow I'll test it, mmmm, multichoke, even if it has to be one shot at a time!
