big simmo999
Go to a clay ground and book a lesson - you'll never look back. It might cost a bob or two but you will have been taught the basics correctly. There is no definate "lead distance". It depends on the speed of the bird, wind, cartridge, flight direction, your swing speed etc. All this comes with experience. Even now I sometimes swing on a bird and shoot - only to see it fly away...leaving me thinking "how the hell did I miss that?" There is no short cuts - but get the basics right before any bad habits creep in is the best way to go

UKPoacher
If you are decoying then 40yds is a bit far. Try setting your deeks in a group from 20 yds to 30 yds with a big gap in the middle at around 25 yds. Wait for the pigeons to come in and put their landing gear out - then blat 'em! That way lead is minimal and they are within range to ensure that more pellets hit them.
