Blackpowder
Went to one of the farms where I have permission this morning, my third visit to this rookery in a week, to find that someone had been there yesterday with a shotgun and culled most of the branchers so only 4 for me. This is beside the point as what I had noticed on my previous visits was that the nests in the north east corner of the wood appeared unused, no whitewash of droppings under them, or egg shells. A month or so ago we had horrendous rain and wind from this direction which leads on to the theme of this post. As I said in this wood there were a few branchers and some flying young rooks, but today I saw two newly dead completely bald recently hatched nestlings on the ground. I presume those had died in the nest and had been jettisoned by the parent birds. So! Are those really immature nestlings the result of parent rooks starting a second brood after loosing the first due to bad weather?
