If you are using it for shooting/beating etc. You could use Boiled Linseed Oil, I ruined a good stick which had been varnished whilst beating.

Once a week for a month

Once a month for a year

Once a year for life.

I am very pleased with the result on a Blackthorn stick, bit tacky to start with but not any more.

I am also fairly new to Stickmaking and recommend you join the British Stickmakers Guild www.thebsg.org.uk

Membership includes a very good booklet on stickmaking tips etc. I think its six issues a year.

It is great to get out and source your own sticks.

With regards to the handles for something relatively easy why not treat yourself to a lathe, if you are anywhere near Notts let me know.

Good Luck.

Hi Sammy, You have not said what you are making the stick from; is it a one piece, or are you mounting a horn or antler on it. Indeed, what sort of wood are you using for the shank? Most of the above will affect what you "do" with it.

30 years of stick making and teaching others are at your disposal.
