Linny58
Hello, I'm 16 years old and I've been beating since I was 12 and now I want to get a shotgun certificate so I can fire on beaters day and I regularly attend clay pigeon shooting. Anyway my Parents are devoiced and there is a cabinet at both houses so would it be possible for my Dad to transfer one of his guns onto my license and then I keep that gun in the house that I live in and then get it and take it to clay pigeon shooting with me. Is that all above board? Thanks.

Hi Linny I "think" you would be OK with this, though the law is quite complicated (see http://tna.europarchive.org/20100419081706...df?view=Binary) Under 17 you will have a restricted licence anyway which won't allow you to buy guns or ammunition, but will let you own and use a shotgun unsupervised. I suggest that you have a chat with the FEO before you apply for your licence. If you come across as a mature and sensible chap and the FEO is one of the decent old school types you will probably find him / her to be very supportive and helpful. Do you get an over 18 YO to buy the ammunition then you use their ammunition and then give them back the shells not used?

Again, I think you can "own" cartridges, but not buy them, so you should be OK to hold on to the unused ones. Daft I know, but there you go. Just store them securely and preferably away from the guns. FEO will confirm this though, give them a call even if you just want a chat about such things, they really are pretty approachable. Once you have a cert you can "borrow " a gun for 72 hours without it being entered onto the cert if you dont have a cert you can't shoot without the cert holder being there or at section 11 ground (its a bit different if you live (occupy) the land on the land you shoot on). So with my certificate I could keep on borrowing my Dad's gun every time I go shooting (not with my Dad but supervised).
TJ91
at 16 you can borrow a shotgun for 72 hours from any sgc holder and shoot on land where you have permission without any supervision. supervision up until you turn 16 then you are free to go alone so long as you have permission to borrow the gun and permission to shoot where you are. but like everyone says, check with the officer first, he will be able to point you in the right direction and answer any questions you have!
