richg
Went to look at two small fields of Spring rape the other day, both are well up now and have had Gas guns on since day one, so was not expecting much, but to my surprise, and despite four gas guns going off every ten minutes, a lot of birds were evident, and were all dropping into a bare patch in the middle of one field, so yesterday afternoon i went to have a go. My first problem was getting my kit to this bare patch and the fact that it was right out in the open, with no cover it was just four poles with a net round, it took me an hour to get set up, Magnet, Floater and a dozen dead birds, 2.15pm and i get in my hide, straight away birds are over the deeks, but i soon realised that i could only pick birds over the bare patch as the crop was three feet high, so this restricted my shooting, birds came thick and fast for the first hour then slowed down to a steady trickle till 5.30 when i packed up. 68 birds picked up and a good dozen lost in the crop, so over 80 shot, but i left many not shot at, as they would be lost in the crop. The afternoon was blisteringly hot and i was exhausted by the time i finished, Gamebore had given me some 28gm Steel 6s to try instead of my usual 7.1/2s. i did get less wounded birds than normal. I fired 93 cartridges for what was effectivly an 80 bag, so i am pleased with that. I think the field will shoot again in a few days, and i will be testing some Gamebore Silver Steel in 5s. Will keep you posted. Rich G.
alexr
I've used Gamebore steel on clays. they were OK. The only thing I found was that you had to shorten the ranges slightly. I suppose that would not have been a problem in the circumstances outlined above as the terrain did that for you any way. Anyway good shooting
