Brad93
Well i'm thinking about getting a Lab later on this year and want to learn abit about training him/her first. Are there any books or dvd's you could reccomend to start me off?
cracker
Tonnes of 'em if you were training L'Americaine or even training L'Americaine for British dogs Of course, that also would mean you wouldn't be throwing chains or stones at a Lab to get it to stop or sit to the whistle, as advised below, either. WGD
Another tremedously helpful post from cracker Have a look for Edward Martin's Retriever Training Masterclass by Sporting Scene. That, and some others, are listed here. http://www.turnerrichards.co.uk/acatalog/G...ning_DVD_s.html

(Help... ) MG throwing the chain to distract a dog work's to good affect(although i think it's more of a dig at a post on another thread).next you'll be telling me heel stick's don't work either? Righto, that's just what a dog needs, a chain length coming at it to break its concentration on hunting - or marking. What are you trying to train, a gerbil? Or have you not ever trained a dog to sit as obedience afield with nothing more than a whistle and a command? "To good effect" - A heeling stick is used to very good effect - if you know how to use it. (Hint: you don't use chain length at the end of it.) But maybe WGD can impart some of his special training for finished gundogs that might differ. WGD, have at it, "masterclass" and all, lad. cracker
Hmm, the spaniels are all field trial worthy - no running in and plenty of running after multiple mark retrieves - and the retrievers, the Labs, are all running field trials at the highest levels. However, I've never had a "masterclass" so some deficiencies in both dogs and handler probably could be detected. Help us out a wee bit, WGD... WGD
What's up cracker? Been roused into posting something useful instead of your usual "pics & digs" posts. Who offered a "special training" or a "masterclass"? Not me. Advice, help, the benefits of my limited experience, yes. Do you agree with my advice? I don't care. Does the OP benefit? Maybe, if they do - great - if they don't they'll move on and take advice from someone who suits them better. And you STILL haven't contributed ANYTHING this thread Keep going mate, you're a whizz with a keyboard and a camera.
