whelping

My little springer has given birth to 8 lovely liver and white springers. All seems to be going ok, pups were born 2 days ago. She is feeding them and they seem to be thriving. I have heard different advice on the food hte bitch should get.

What I am after is some advice on what to do, what to watch out for and what food to give mum.

I have a bit of common sense which should help but are there any things that are a must do. I keep the bedding clean, they are in a homemade whelping box, big enough for purpose. there is clean drinking water available, they have a quiet spot in garage out of way, feeding mum on chicken soup and rice, dried puppy food and milk with warm water.

When the pups are older should I try and supplement mum's milk with lamb's milk (made up from powder)

Feed the bitch lots of good quality dog food, as much as she can eat.

If you need to supplement the puppies do it with Welpi or another dog milk replacer. Why don't we rear human babies on cows milk - it would be simple - but we don't because it's the wrong composition. Just like lambs milk would be for puppies.

Make sure you keep them warm and draft free.

ballymac get their tails docked at 3 days im sure u know that , id get them under a heat lamp as well there is a nip in the air now at nite plus they will thrive under the heat lamp, just give the bitch a good quality dog meal and when pups are about 3 wks old offer them a good quality puppy food mixed up to a porride slop till they start to eat well then u can just start feeding the puppy meal dry at about 6wks old, and worm them every 2 weeks from 2 wks old thats they way ive reared all my pups and theve all done fine good luck with them
