Non paying customers

Phone them again and tell them a copy of the invoice is in the post, in case they say they haven't got it. Also tell them you MUST have a cheque by the xth date to stop any further proceedings, which you will collect personally. Make sure you get details of who you speak to. Call in with another copy of the invoice (in case they play stupid) and insist you are there to collect a payment as arranged. I always got a cheque at this point. Some accounts staff will sit on things forever if they can, and hopefully it's just a matter of getting through their thick skins.

If you're very unlucky and come away empty handed then your suspicions are right, so cancel all future work and get a claim going.

Don't be afraid of pushing for your money - just be pleasant but firm. Poor paying clients are a nightmare and something we can all do without.

Good luck!

I think I would arrange to meet the chap, lay it on the line & tell them all you want is honesty and perhaps come to some kind of arrangement - take 50% now and the rest at an agreed time?

Its not nice and I hope you get what you are owed - but I would definitely try the nice approach first.

:look:

Another good suggestion.

The sitting in someones office and the legal route are a bit further down the line. At the moment they are just a slow payer. I have just been paid this week for a shipment I did in July and on the flip side today I have had a Polish haulier chase me for an invoice that I owe him from October 2009  (he hasnt previously chased or sent a statement)

I can however empathise with your situation. I had a client that cocked me around massively, he bounced cheques, made many false payment date promises etc. It went on for about two months. The mistakes he made however were that he works from home, he is within driving distance from me and in an early meeting showed me a picture of his prized Rolls Royce Corniche sitting on his driveway. In the end I told him that I was coming up to visit him and see his prized Rolls Royce in person - we got paid the week after.
