Deer antler

My son found an antler when beating on our shoot last week, he now wants me to turn it into a stick for him.

Does it need any special treatment after cutting? (sealing etc,)

How do you attach it to the shaft?

Once I have selected and cut a shaft, how long does it need to season?

Is now the right time to cut the shaft?

Thanks,

Chris.

I cant answer ur question on seasoning antlers as i have never worked with antler or horn.

There are different ways to attach handles. The load they have to bear is a factor. You can attach it by using a wooden dowel or a threaded bar.I dont attach handles to my sticks i only make one piece sticks but i have a friend who does so i will try to get some pictures of him attaching a handle and post them up here for you lad as a guide

Now is the right time to cut your shank while the sap is not flowing in the trees as the season faster when cut now. Leave it season in a airy shed on the rafters or somewhere like that where you can lie it out flat and it should be ready to work with in between 6 -12 months time depending on the thickness of the shank you cut and the type of wood it is.

Hope this helps
