gwb
been a while since my last post here. my dog just keeps wanting to play with other dogs. last 8 weeks I have been working away and as such I have not spent much time with the dog so have gone backwards with him, this is to be expected the thing is he has become a bit more unsteady, and three times in the last few weeks he has run off when other dogs have come into view when training we try to train away from other distractions but the other day we were going well when all of a sudden a greyhound came out of the blue and then both dogs were running everywhere until I could get him back. It happened again in a park when another dog came into view and I called and blew the whistle [i knew i shouldnt of done that but it was instinct] but he was gone! and then tonight two dogs came within 60ft and I had him sitting by me and i was just about to put the lead on when he sprinted toward them before i could grab him! any tips would be grateful. He isn a 14month old lab who is generally good but has become a bit more unsteady of late and downright disobediant when other dogs are near will he grow out of this? chris o
am curiuse bout this as mine does the same. i have been told that it could be with age. he will also be going through his teenage years aswell which want help. one thing i was told was make myself more appealing then the other dog. so when you see another dog before he gets into view give him treats so hopefully when a dog comes in view for the dog he is to busy getting treats rather then running off. i am waiting to try this theory as every time i am out with mine no one else is out for some reason. but i have been told he will grow out of it. but try n mix him round other dogs but on the lead though been doing that with mine and it might have worked. soreshoulder
my dog is about 3 years old and he was originally my sister's so have been around him his whole life, he used to be as you explain but in the last couple of months has become much steadier and less excitable around other dogs
J@mes
I am still going through this with mine, we are going back to a trainer at the minute who has got me going back to basics and training her to stop on the whistle, which she will do most of the time but not when others are around. Also getting her to walk at my side and to sit beside me, even when there are "fun" things going on such as a dummy being tossed about - teaching her that she only to leave my side when told to, not when something more exciting is going on! He will be introducing other dogs to our training session in order to stamp this out, as it is an on-going problem. whenever there are other dogs, animals or people in the area she legs it and pays no attention to me whatsoever. No amount of socialisation has cured this, she has been going to the pub, visiting farms and both my parents and the inlaws who have dogs since she was 12 weeks old (now 17 months) and it has made no difference. ziplex
My GSP was, and still is unless I tell her otherwise, the worlds worst for 'visiting' other people and dogs. A trailing lead will help as it did for her, it's a bit savage if you're not careful but it's worth a try
