Your thoughts on my 686 choking

Recommended Posts

afternoon,

uppon inspection it appeares that my 686 game gun witch is marked on the barrels as quarter and half choke, but the top barrle has been made into cylinder

now why would someone want to do this? im not to worryed as the gun pattens well and not much is getting away if hit within normal distance but it puzzles me and could this affect value?

thanks

Dan

Seems like someone has been using top barrel first hence opening this one up

with the tighter choke in the bottom barrel,a guy I know shoots a lot of skeet

but prefers a longer barrel fixed choke game gun and does this to all the guns he gets

he also shoots top barrel first just personal preference I suppose, dont know if he loses

money on them but I know of two berettas and a browning hes done this to. :good:

Several things spring to mind here.

1. When game shooting with an O/U firing the top barrel first means when you eject after firing one shot you don't need the gun gape open as far as you would with firing the bottom barrel first, thus meaning a quicker reload. My old Perazzi MX3 had the trigger configured to fire top first from the factory, the majority of Perazzi triggers are not selective. In theory you'd be shooting a driven bird forward i.e. further away from you so with more choke, leaving the more open choked bottom barrel for a closer range second shot.

2. If the top barrel choke is more open than the bottom barrel and is fired first I would think this somewhat defeats the object of the above.

3. With a O/U with a selective trigger you can shoot the tighter choked top barrel first without messing the gun about.

4. It is alleged that firing the top barrel first has a different recoil effect to bottom barrel first, but I haven't noticed a difference to be honest.
