rtaylor
I have just started stripping the nasty varnish on my new (to me) semi-auto. I used Nitromors for get the varnish off, use an old toothbrush (not the missus new electric one!) to get the gunk out of the checkering, and wire wool or a scouring pad for the rest of the stock. I just used a paint brush to put the Nitromors on and you might need a couple of goes at it. I couldn't get all the metal work of mine, but try and get it so you are just doing the wood. After washing and drying the stock I used van-dyck crystals (from Axminster tools) for the stain. Its water based and is dead easy to use. For the oil I used pure Tung oil, also from Axminster. I have used this method before on my side by side and was very pleased with the result. I did one coat a day for about a week, then a couple a week, then once a week, then once a month and then once every so often. Ending up with a couple times a year. Don't put too much oil on and rub it in properly. I just pour a few drops on my palm and rub it in with my hands, the heat helps the oil to soak in. I'll add some more pictures when the oil is on. rtaylor
Here is the stock after 4 or 5 coats of oil. The colour will continue to get deeper with more coats.

rtaylor
Also does anyone know anything about this gun. As I said it is new to me. Just says Baikal on my ticket. I can't see any model numbers/names. Stamped 'made in USSR' I would guess around 20-30 years old. It is inertia driven rather than gas. Thats about all I know about it but if anyone knows anything it would be appreciated.

Inertia driven semi autos are Benelli's baby and its break offs! Edited January 4, 2011 by rob4586
rtaylor
Tommy as you know yourself hatsans are ****, to say the least. I would be better of with a javelin than one of them, or to use one as a javelin! Its a TOZ (Tula ordinance factory). Not sure if I'm getting on with it though.
