fuzrat
Looking at doing some bunny bashing on the golf course where I am a member, I feel that a sub 12 air rifle wont give me enough range as its quite open and not a lot of stalking potential to get close enough. Does the land have to be cleared for fac air the same as 22rim or hmr? Is fac air the same as 22rim etc for having a closed ticket to start or is it open? Looking further down the track I would like to move up to hmr and 243 in the future, would 2 or 3 years with fac air help with getting an open variation for one of these at a later date? Thanks, Fuzrat
kyska
Yep, treat FAC air as any other firearm.
fuzrat
Thought so, might just go straight for rimmy or hmr
SilentKill
Thought so, might just go straight for rimmy or hmr First find out if the land already has a classification as you don't have an open ticket! then go from there! (most golf courses are cleared up to .22RF at least! unless very residential located)

No, not really. When you apply for any firearm, you have to show a need for it, whatever the calibre. The fact that you've never owned or shot that calibre before "shouldn't" make any difference. However, in the real world, FEO's have lots of tricks up their sleeves to put off an application that they are not happy with (mentoring etc). Previous experience of the calibre you're applying for (ie going out with a mate who has a ,243) counts for a lot more in easing their minds and smoothing your application than experience with something entirely different (FAC Air). As far as getting any calibre opened, with most forces they'll expect you to be holding a closed licence for a period of time before opening it anyway so don't worry too much about it at this stage. A closed cert isn't that bad, it's easy enough to get land checked. I've often found it's already been done in the past and a quick phone call is all it takes. fuzrat
Cheers Colster, I suppose I was thinking with too much common sense. Wether FAC air or .470 nitro you still need to have the basics ie safe backstop, spot on quarry identification, knowing the footpaths, dwellings, livestock areas on your land etc and experience with hmr would count toward .243 etc. Yes bigger calibre but its still a firearm and has the same reponsibilities, if you can show need previous experience with a smaller calibre should go a long way. But hey when has anything that comes out of home office or government ever had common sense attached. Fuzrat
