Another day at the pigs

Went out as a last minute thing today. had a call to ask how the eye was and would i like to go out for a few hours on the pigeons again.

no recce done so no idea on how this would be as i injured my shooting eye a couple of weeks ago and have been struggling to get a focus on the bird and bead so had to give it the one eye jack and try and force the eye to focus.

when we got there we put a couple hundred birds up that split into two flocks and went two differant ways but they went for a marathon flight a disappeared over the hills and was well gone. we knew where they would be going , two rape fields on either side of the county and knew they wouldn't come back until they had their morning feed.

we set up in a double hide next to each other so we could take the Mickey out of each others poor form, at least i have a good excuse.

matey was hitting doubles as if they were going out. 20g 28 of 7 and he was dropping birds like a demon. i took it steady and just tried to take a bird at a time. sometimes i hit one and others i missed.

called it a day at at 3pm as we had a bit of a walk to the truck and to top it off we had a puncture in the wheel barrow.

i shot over about 100 carts and Norman was about the same, i was letting him take most of the birds as i just couldn't see some of them but we ended with around 130 birds picked up and a few that ended being hit by cars on the road behind us. i say around 130 because i got to 120 and forgot to use the clicker on the last birds. the buckets take 30birds and the bag hold 40. 3 buckets and the bag but the bucket where over full so until i get the final count tomorrow i will not know.

still a good day again for winter shooting with over 300 in the last 2 trips out.

happy days

  • 4 weeks later...

Out again on the same feild yesterday. couldn't get close to as one would like so FUD decoys had to be set out at about 40 yards in front and 10 yards to right, the pinewood rotary 20 yards to left. the wind was light to 10 mph off the back and the sun was swinging behind. the plan was that any birds that tried to get into the pattern would swing in between the two and then over the hide. started very well with about 70 birds by 12 noon then it just shut up shop. 4 more hours for 30 more birds.

pack up on 100 birds on the buckets. and about 4 lost to the farm behind. this one field has shot well with 233 birds on the two occasions, two weeks apart.

the other feild has done even better with 336 birds for 2 goes with 2 weeks in between.

over 500 birds in the last 4 trips out. there is one more farm with birds on that hasn't been shot for 4 weeks and then i get a call from farmer today asking me to shoot another farm that been hit hard. happy days? NO! its a bloomin mile walk, uphill, if the birds play ball then its a stupid walk back. no 4x4 can get to the area and farmer will not drive it until its dried out more. :hmm:
