apache
No it shouldn't be a problem. The police do like some experience with a similar calibre to what you apply for. If you go out with someone and get them to jot a few lines to the police [or better have them as a referee and they can state your experience with them on the form] and all should be fine. If you have no experience with a 'proper' firearm you risk being slapped with a mentor condition where you have to be accompanied when out. Where abouts are you? [Different forces seem more or less lax, you might get a more accurate answer].

apache
With 'club' shooting [as far as I know, because I don't do it] you need to be a probationary member of a club for 6 months at least before applying for your FAC for that purpose. Although it's shooting some of the same guns, the major safety issues of field shooting [mainly backstops] not relevant on a range! Joining a club would delay your application and may not help the field side. Is there no-one you know with a FAC? Make sure you do a good job of coming across as a sensible sort when you have your interview!

They could easily say: "Get some experience at the club for a year or so and then come back and apply" If you've got the land, you're fine. Just don't put up barriers and hurdles to get your licence. The law states that so long as you can give good reason as to why you should have a firearm (not the same for shotguns) and are able to pass police checks, you are entitled to a firearm. Your land and a permission slip will suffice. Good luck
