The piston rod unscrews Stewart. I found it easier when I cut the old washer away first. Clamp the piston in a vice with soft jaws, or use some wood to protect the metal. ;) I tried to edit this earlier, but failed miserably  You will also need a tool to undo the retaining nut which is inside the piston, I think John Knibbs sells them but you can make one yourself using a tubular bar and leave two lugs on one end.

Hi hyflier, Thanks for taking the time to reply but I've had a good look at the piston and there's definately no sign of any nut inside the piston or grooves for a suitable tool. There is a loose washer inside it which the spring sits on but there's no sign of anything under it either and I have looked very carefully. Still puzzled.

Take out the washer and using a torch, look from the back of the piston rod down inside the piston. You should be able to see (ok I called it a nut) another washer with two slots in it. This is what you need to unscrew in order to dismantle the piston assembly.

Hi again hyflier.

Have double checked with the washer out and there's definately no slots to be seen. Have now lost the plot and ripped out the old washer with a pair of pliers. This allows the conical part in front of the leather seal to move but I still can't fathom out how to replace it with the new one. Now being an engineer by trade, this is getting embarrassing.
