andyd99
Ive got a 51 plate freelander which I love to bits, with standard 215 65 r16 road tyres fitted onto standard Landrover 5 spoke rims. My question is would a set of bf goodrich 235 85 16 tyres fit onto them, as ive found a set within my budget. Don't want to get them to be lumbered with them if they don't fit. TaxiDriver
NO Its awfully complicated to explain but it's late at night. Basically the overall diameter & rolling radius is going to be too great. Edited March 15, 2011 by TaxiDriver

fuzrat
very simply, the 215 bit is the tyre width, the 65 bit is a percentage of the width to give the height of the tyre and the r16 bit is the radius of the wheel rim. so that gives 215x65%= a overall circumference of 139.75 a 235/85 would be 199.75 far to big a size increase. Will make it very high geared, your speedo will show major incorrect and tyres may well rub on bumpers etc on full lock. google tyre calculator and thhey tell will you how big a difference in size and speed change you will have and if its within the limits. (wont tell you if it rubs tho. Fuzrat

By your calculation above would give you the diameter not the circumference. taking the standard tyre measurements, 215 is the sectional width of the tyre (sectional width is measured at the widest point of the tyre, usually half way up the sidewall). 65 is the aspect ration of the tyre and is the hight of sidewall expressed as a percentage of the sectional width 16 is the rim diameter. So using this formula, 235 sectional width (How wide the tyre is 85 Aspect ration (Hight of sidewall expressed as 85% of the sectional width) 16" is the rim size You can see that 85% of 235 is going to be significantly bigger than 65% of 215 Hope that helps Edited March 16, 2011 by TaxiDriver
