Back casting

Hi lads, i have a wee springer bitch at present who is showing a lot of promise and am considering trialling her next year, the only fault i have with her is that she is back casting quite a bit and hunting ground that she has already covered! She won't run in any tests over bare ground but when she hits scenty ground she is as good a hunter as i have seen. Any suggestions on getting the back casting sorted would be !

IMO she's not back casting, that's a term used to describe and air scenting hunter that turns away from the wind.

She's double hunting and all you need to do is move forward a bit quicker so she is not hunting the same ground twice, keep pushing her on but give her time to work her beat - it's a balancing act and depends a lot on the cover (or lack of).

Cheers WGD for the reply mate, had her out earlier over a bit of ground full of rabbit scent and pushed her on a bit, have to admit she was hunting alot better with a bit more purpose, as you say a balancing act, she hunted hard this evening, just need to tye everingthing together and i may have a good wee dog!!

Try pipping your whistle when the dog is POINTING forwards or at you -- then it will turn and cross in front of you. If it loops backwards - leave it hunting, hands/arms still -- UNTIL it faces forwards / at you - then give your command (worth a stop whistle to inhibit it's backwards progress ?)

I tend only to give a command ONLY when I can see the little bu"$"ers eyes and KNOW it's LOOKING at ME :good:

otherwise you might as well stick your whistle in the hole you can see
