njc110381
I've spent a lot of time thinking about using longer bullets in my Hornet recently. The trouble being that generally, longer modern bullets don't fit the mag. Well today I sat reading Markbivvy's post (again) which talks about trimming back the plastic filler in the rear of the mag. Not being one to modify anything I can't go back on I decided that wasn't the way to go, so... I took the mag apart for probably the tenth time and headed out to the shed to cut a thin strip of steel down to the width of the factory follower. Then I ground all the little notches out so it would fit down the mag housing. I then bent the ends over, not to the original length but at a size that fully fills the housing without any rear spacer at all. With a little fettling it now feeds rounds fine. I've not checked what OAL it will work to but I've seated a Sierra 45gr spitzer quite well out (the long one, not the Hornet spec one) and there's still 5mm or so left for more! Now all I need to find out is if the rifling will spin them fast enough to be stable. I'll post up my findings as I go but I'll go right up to 50/55gr to see what happens! EDIT... What is the maximum weight 1-16 should work with? Edited March 30, 2011 by njc110381
markbivvy
Good do N. Cant help you on the 50 or 55 grain rounds as i have not tried them, the 40 grn blitzkings do all i need. you do know the plastic stop also stacks the rounds so they do get get stuck on top of each other. :o Edited March 30, 2011 by markbivvy
njc110381
You mean it stops the rims from jumping over eachother and jamming? I bet that happens the day I need a quick follow up! I've tested it with about 50 cycles. No problems so far but you can bet your life the time will come! I'll make a little spacer just for the top. njc110381
I made a top spacer and that caused all sorts of bother. The rounds were jamming on it and stacking up at funny angles so I took it out again. I think if a spacer is needed, it must be full length or it will snag the case rims as they pass. I'll give it a go as it is and see how it goes. It seems to feed fine with the longer follower. If not, I'll make a longer insert so there is no edge for the rounds to catch on.
