Guest kenny
Hi I am looking at getting a Savage Thumb Hole HMR and putting this sight on it. http://www.uttings.co.uk/Product/543/103341/nikko-stirling-mountmaster-4-12x50-ao-ir-rifle-scope/ I know everyone has their own BEST sight but what do you think of Nikko Stirling sights in general. I have one on a PCP air rifle and like it. I know it is only an air rifle but it is only going on an HMR not much recoil I would think. I am just venturing into rim fires. So all help welcome. Cheers Kenny

bullet boy
Kenny the Nikko Sterling range of scopes are good and will be fine on your rifle.I've always said to buy the best scope you can afford! There's other good scope manufacturers out there that are also excellent and they are Bushnell,Simmons,MTC,and Falcon.Other higher makers of rifle optics are the likes of S&B,Swarovski,Zeiss,Leupold and Nightforce amongst others. For the .17HMR I would personally look at Bushnell,Nikko,Simmons,Falcon or MTC optics. ATB in your choice.

Cheers Kenny my mate has one on his .223 the glass has poor resolution compared to the top makes like s+bender, swavoski, leopold etc. however he shoots ok with it, but a few times he has said to me he can't see things properly to shoot when i am spotting and they are as clear as you like with the binos. If it were me i should buy a leoplold 3-9 x 40mm secondhand shouldn't cost the earth and they are normally very good on the lifetime warranty thing. I used a vx2 leoplold for most of the time i had my HMR and it performed flawlssly, indeed although that scope is gunless at present i shouldn't sell it

ellebarto
Thats really interesting because I've got the same Savage HMR (love it) and I went through a similar process. Cant recall the make of Nikko I had but I found it average at distances over 60 yards and then as the sun started to come down I lost my image very early compared to my shooting buddy and his Leupold. In the end I swapped for a leo. Obviously another price bracket but for dusk shooting and at the kind of distance a HMR is good for, its a good balance of quality against price for that gun! Hope that helps! Uttings have the best prices as well and some on sale I think!
Gimlet
I bought a pair of Nikko Sterling Gameking 4-16x50s for my .22lr and .17 hmr. Can't honestly say I'm too impressed. The hmr's scope had to go back because it wasn't holding zero. Replaced it temporarily with a Hawke 3-12x50ir from my air rifle and found optical quality a vast improvement. The resolution of the Nikko on my .22 is distinctly misty compared with the Hawke. If you're on a tight budget I'd have to recommend the Hawke over a Nikko. Weaver also make some very good lower priced scopes. I'm not sure they do a vari power with a 50mm object though, but I may be wrong. I'm going for a Meopta Meopro 3-12x50 for my hmr. Cheapest I could find one was £360 from, I think off the top of my head Northallerton Guns. I've made myself a rule now I'll never by a scope that I wouldn't put on my .308. The number of cheapos I've junked in the past would have bought some decent European glass by now.
Guest kenny
The budget is not that tight I am just not to sure what is a good make. I don’t want to spend silly amounts as I am after another 2 rifles yet. The money is soon spent when you add Bi-pod, Moderator, Sight, spare mag This is what I am looking at now http://www.uttings.co.uk/Product/543/102882/hawke-sidewinder-30-6-24x56-ir-rifle-scope/ Cheers Kenny

But you're looking at a £150 Hawke scope with £100 of frills which you won't need on an hmr. You won't need 24x mag. I head shoot rabbits out to 130/140 yards quite comfortably on 12 power. A lot of shooters go further on less than 10. Theses ranges seem huge after an air rifle but if you don't try to run before you can walk you'll expand your range quite quickly as you get used to the gun. Without very high mag you won't need side focus either. Set to 100yds and leave it there. Illuminated reticles hike the price of scopes. Most are far too bright even on the lowest settings. Good resolution and light gathering are much more important. Milldot reticles are no advantage either. They're designed for air rifles and the increments are too large for hmr. The 56mm lense and 30mm tube are good though. If you can couple those with mag to 12 power, lose the IR and side focus and go with a plainer reticle you'll be spending your money more effectively. Take a look at Bushnell and don't rule out second hand. By the way, you mention mods. My experience has been get a dedicated .17 hmr mod. DM80, ASE, Bowket, to name 3. I burned a SAK out on my hmr in no time at all. Hopes this helps and dosen't confuse you more.
