Clamps
I had an hour out with Max today - 15 month Lab. The Pigeons were not really cooperating but Max got his first retrieve. It was only 20 yards away but he nailed it perfectly and returned very pleased with himself. With both myself and Max being complete novices, I am very proud of him. May this be the first of many. I did not have long out today, hence only the one pigeon, however one is better than none.

garyb
The problem with young dogs and pigeons are well documented. You can obviously do as you please though
kent
Some dogs won't pick Pigeons after a bit, some wont do crows or waders. Hey ho, if you only shoot pigeon and the dog won't pick em , he aint no use to you is he?. Well done, a good age to get him onto the real thing a lttle

You can obviously do as you please though Retrieving problems are well documented full stop. Some won't pick pigeon, some won't pick woodcock, some won't pick snipe... why? It's gundogs we've got, not pheasant dogs. Train them to pick anything and they will. Mine pick what they're sent for, whether it's fur, feather or a shoe box full of lego. As a novice - Please be mind full about sending it for Crows -they can do serious damage if not dead. I very rarely send mine on a crows -based on the fact that I'm not good enough to guarantee a Kill with every shot! Keep up the good work. Sprocket. Clamps
Thanks for the advice guys - I mainly do shoot pigeon and that is why I got Max, and I am aware of the feather problem. however I might have a chance of some picking up later in the year, but I cannot believe that a intelligent Lab can only retrieve one type of bird? or am I being totally naive? As always - Good advice from WGD. A good dog usually picks up anything you train it to. Just be careful what you train it to pick up!
