.philmypower.
Hi guys, me and my brother inlaw are thinking of making a smoker in my garden, I believe you can use an old fridge, but that's about all I know. Any one got any plans or ideas, would be really appreciated.
semiautolee
just found this write up I am in the process of fine tuning one I made from a four drawer filing cabinet. Take out the drawers and slides. Take the front off the drawers. Cut off the dividers between the top two drawers and the bottom two. Bit if metal at the back and weld two fronts with a cut off divider in the middle and you have two doors made to fit. Three hinges per door. Swivel catch to hold it shut. Predrill and use decent length pop-rivets rathers than self tappers. Cut a couple of holes at the base and pop-rivet on a closable vent on each. Make sure you can get a good flow of air through the vents. Cut a hole on the top of the cabinet to allow smoke to emerge. I am putting one of those chimney cowl things in the hole purely to make it pretty. Get some old oven shelves and weld them to the inside of the roof to allow you to hang stuff right at the top, watch out for the vent. More oven shelves welded together and attached to the slide attachments inside. Use the attachments for the bottom three drawers. Hinge the bottom rack to allow access to the fire or whatever. The top one leave out for hanging space. I have not put in a smoke spreader but you could put one in on the bottom slider attachments. Put whatever you want into the bottom to produce heat, smoke etc. You could put in a water bowl if you wanted. No pics at present as I have kept changing the design and swopping self tappers for pop-rivets. Cocking up the top vent by trying for one with a flow control, Tar from the smoke gummed up the control. Forgot the hanging attachment at the roof. Strengthen the metal holding the doors together. And it is still down at my neighbours waiting for all of the MIG welding to be done. Told him no rush and his old dustbin type smoker still works, smoke coming out of every rust hole. .philmypower.
Thanks, sounds great but I can't weld if I don't find anything easier I'll call in a favour of my mate who can weld, but I would rather make it my self. Thanks again

forest079
If you wanted a hot smoker so you can eat it there and then all you need is a portable gas stove / BBQ and one of the old enamel bread bins with a few holes and a wire rack inside. Fill bottom of bread bin with wood chippings, place meat/fish on the wire rack inside place lid on top, put the bread bin on the BBQ/ Gas stove then just a waiting game. Normally for fish it should be done when the lid is just getting to hot to touch. Mark
pavman
i made a hot smoker from a stainless oven cooking dish (with lid) it works, i set a trivet in the bottom and add some shavings under that then put it in my camping stove on a low heat for about 20 mins this both cooks and smokes the food. Whilst it works, my experiance is a longer cold smoke would be better to get right into the meat/fish and then cook after as required, so my next try will be a smoke box and chimny into a smoker for the cool smoke Edited August 8, 2011 by pavman

I made my own coald smoker from marine ply . Looks just like a centry box but with a door on the front & an old iron spud pot to burn the saw dust in . Good Luck at it . Pole Star PS still working on idea for a large hot smoker made from a steel water tank with a gas ring under it .
