Brief report of the days outing

Met up with ste12b at 6.00am. 1 hour 15 mins later we were scanning the fields for pigeons.

Never actually saw any large numbers feeding anywhere. Quick chat with the farmer ,and we ended up setting up on the edge of some recently cut barley stubble. Really slow to start with. 4 crows were the first things to bite the dust.

Eventually got a couple of pigeons to put on the rotary. That didn't help, rotary was spooking the few that came in for a look.

So just left the flapper going and pulled in the rotary. (damn timer packed up on the flapper, so that was going constantly.)

Things picked up a bit, not frantic, but a steady trickle throughout the red hot day.

We packed up at 6.45pm nothing was remotely interested in the decoys by then.

We ended up with 45 confirmed woodpigeon, (probably quite a few more that never made it home that night too)

6 crows

8 ferals

So not too bad a day. Enjoyed it immensely as usual.

One interesting thing was, we saw a muntjac deer. Thats the first one I've ever seen in Yorkshire.

ste12b seemed to enjoy it too. :good:

That's a decent bag, esp in this weather...I have been leaving it late to go out, last night didn't set up until 5pm and managed to get 10 before it ended...I put the magnet right in front of the hide for a while but lately I haven't been using it at all. If you put it a fair distance from the hide will that not spook them completely away from you?

I'm not sure if you've misunderstood what I meant by pulling the rotary in. I meant that I stopped using it completely, and dismantled it.

Interesting point here. Although I was shooting over freshly cut barley, the pigeons that I shot had been feeding on the still standing rape fields nearby, as their crops were full of rape seeds. There is still quite a bit of standing rape around.

I had exactly the same, of the 41 I shot on Sunday on barley stubble, several had rape seeds in their crop.

Re the rotary, I was wondering about the position...as recently I have been using it right in front of the hide.
