sitsinhedges
Maybe put some nice tight chokes in to hold the pattern together if it's a multi choke Plastic wads seem to hold the pattern together for longer too, arguably  Edited August 28, 2011 by sitsinhedges

Windknot
Hull Sterling Game 28 gram #6 (if your gun has 70mm chambers) Fiocchi does a similar load- both have fibre wads. Recoil is fine in my MK70- I'm hard pressed to tell the difference between that and the 25 gram cartridges. I've also tried some Eley 32 gram cartridges- noticeable recoil in the MK70, and a good kick in a friend's single barrel 20. I've brought down some good birds with the 28 gram load and 1/2 choke, so much so that I don't use anything else in 20 gauge now. For some reason I've never had much joy with #5 shot- maybe pattern density is too low. You need about 34 grammes of 5's to approximate the pellet count of 28 grammes of sixes, and six shot kills perfectly well out to the sort of ranges where I can reliably hit pheasants.
