Testing Mass air flow sensor

anyone tell me how to test the mass air flow sensor off the car? i believe it can be done with multimeter.

the car is my mothers ford fiesta 1.3 LX n reg.

symptoms of car are lack of power, car tends to stall at low revs, it will tick over quite happily, but when in driving mode and coming to a stand still dipping clutch applying brake car will more often than not stall.

mate has run diagnostic gizmo on car and only fault is an error that is not listed but i have found a reference to it stating its a generic code for engine running lean.

my first idea was idle valve as this was highlighted on net as a common problem, but my mate said the maf is common fault and a quick way of testing this is to start car then dis the Mass air flow sensor and the car should cut out, he went on to say i have had cars that have no shown up any errors with faulty MAF but when dist, they have been found to be faulty.

we tried this on my mothers car and the engine runs fine, car pulls away better , does not cut out but i want to make sure before we spend the dosh on a replacement as mother has not got a lot of cash, the sensor is nearly £90 and the idle valve is £60 ish the only other thing i have to check for according to net is air leaks.

your help on this would be most helpful

cheers geoff

If you have unplugged the MAF and it runs better then there lies your problem. That said when i have unplugged them before it casues the car(s) to run like ****. Maybe the Idle valve is being helped along by the MAF being unplugged?

I would have initially guessed at it being the idle control valve as thay cause the said problems, if you can i would whip it out and give it a clean for good messure

Get off to a scrappy you should pick a used MAF up for not alot of cash

yeh thanks for the quick reply, the idle valve i was gonna go for, i used to have loads of grief with one on my old volvo, just really wanted to confirm what mate was telling me, but i had thought of scrappy but dunno if they are gonna be be any good, but i suppose its worth a try considering the cost of a new one.

would you know if i need to get the exact same part number maf or any maf off a ford fiesta 1.3 lx will do?
