Dog running in ! :-(

Problem is my wee cocker is a working pet often walked by kids and or wife which is handy as I'm not always around. The family are not bothered if she does some free hunting but now she has a taste for it she will run in on a scent if it's strong which can be a problem obviously!

Solutions ?

Thanks Will

So are you just training your dog as you go type thing? It really will take a long time mate!

The free hunting is not the major problem, although it can be for other reasons. IMO, recall and steadiness need to be instilled, both have to be achieved before even thinking of going any further, without these things you dont have a working gundog. Both things are basic training for a gundog and should be in place before the dog go's anywhere related to shooting.Without recall and steadiness, you have no working dog. IMHO

hi straightbarrel i have been training him he was not going to be used for anything other than blood trailing he is steady in his training areas will sit for as long as i want him too it was around 6 months ago when i took him stalking in scotland and other than trailing he had never seen a real deer . i ended up shooting one and decided to put him onto the strike and see if he could manage it was really difficult ground but he went straight to the deer which had dropped under a branch and looked like a stone i had actually walked past it but tommy found it . i have put him on every deer since and hes been spot on he just sits shaking with exitement but has never moved before .now i stalked into a couple of roe and decided to use a rotum caller which this doe came bouncing in which made tommy jump up and try to run in but hes always been slipped and a quick back command and a tug on the slip he stepped back i have not had him unslipped while stalking but in his training will do everything so thaught he was ready, atb wayne
