My First Fox Hunt with Gen 3 Night Vision

I got an invite to go shooting with Barrelsniffer & Huntsman one night last week, we set off at 6pm drove for an hour into North Wales, got to the first location and I was handed a Gen 3 Night Vision to use as a spotter, it was pitch black with no moon. I was amazed looking through it, it might as well have been daylight and me wearing a pair of green sunglasses. I was very impressed. We were in a 4x4 and had drove to the top of some very steep hills, The main weapon of the night was a Tikka 223, The wind was howling with an ice cold bite, we put the electronic fox caller on but nothing showed, just before we left that location we spotted 4 bunnies half way up a hill maybe about 225 yrds away, next thing I heard 4 shots and Barrelsniffer say "let's go and get them 4 dead bunnies", so we walked over and found 4 bunnies blown in half. No good for eating but great for ferret food.

We then drove to another location were the owner informed us that he had seen a couple of foxes on his land, again we set up the caller and within 2 mins I spotted a fox about 100yrds just come out of the hedge and running in across open land right into us, then I heard a shot and saw it drop like a stone. a couple of mins later I heard another shot and I looked to see what he shot at and saw another fox drop about 15ft away from the first one, we hauled them over to the owners house and he could not thank us enough, he was impressed as was I.

We then set off to another location were a poultry farmer had told us he had lost some chickens to a fox, we got to a high spotting point and put the caller on again, it was so windy that you could not stand up straight, so we all went prone. A few mins later a fox was spotted but was very far away, I could not even see it, but the other 2 had even more powerfull NV Scopes on and could see the fox in and out of the hedgerow below us around 400yrds out. We waited and watched for a few mins and then "BANG" Barrelsniffer had taken the shot at around 300yrds in the wind and said "Let's go and find it". I though it would have been long gone, but when we eventually walked down to were the fox was, there was nothing to be seen, then I spotted a fresh liver lying on the floor with a blood trail next the the hedgerow. We walked round the other side of the hedgerow to follow the trail but could not see anything, I assumed it must have gone underground in the hedge, so as I looked into the hedge I saw the fox was dead about 5 feet away from were it was shot. I never knew a 223 could do so much damage from so far away.

Big thanks to Barrelsniffer & Huntsman for inviting me, can't wait for the next time !

well done on the write up mark, you will soon be in the countrymans weekly with talents like that :good:

It was an eventful night, the wind was howling and difficult to stay upright,

some good shooting was shown by mick as usual and the 3rd fox, was an exceptional shot from that range, and with the added differculty with the weather conditions.

a good night had by all
