Biting back legs

Hi

My welsh collie has got into a habit of biting his back legs around his hips he has done it for a while and is now taking his top layer of fur off as can see his different colour layer underneath coming through a bit more. I dont think its anything serious as the rest of his coat is perfect and shiny and when we catch him doing it he stops straight away and does not go back to to it for a while. It almost like a nervous habit and we thought it was because we leave him at home during the day on his own however my other half has been off work for the last 3 weeks and he still does it. His food is a high quality food with no allergens in it.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this, I have checked the usual like fleas and ticks etc and mentioned it to the vets and they cant see anything obvious, however did try selling me there overpriced dog food again though

Thanks in advance

How old is the dog? If it is older stiffness in the hips can cause them to do this sort of thing.

Full anal glands will cause them to bite or chew as far back as they can reach.

Equally some kind of allergy could be at play and a hypoallergenic diet may help. All food contains allergens!

He is only about 9 months old and being doing it for about 5 months, as mentioned he has been to the vets and they cant see any reason. They did not suggest the hypo-allergenic food so i am bit hesitant to change his food before trying other things as its rather expensive. I was wrong about the food as you say its all got allergens however its a high quality food Burns Duck and Rice dry food and he did it before when on butchers puppy.

Our Collie cross is a parculiar dog. When she was younger we had to give he puzzle toys to keep her mind occupied even though we had mr ginge as well (he is much older and just slept all day) - I even hid her food around the garden in and under stuff.

Although she is calmer now she still is a parculiar dog

may be worth a bath to cleanse the skin and hair, some soothing ointment and possibly a collar until the area has fully healed. you can take it off when you are out as likely he will be too busy to bother with biting,

just a note that flea saliva can irritate some dogs and although he may not have fleas he could have been bitten and it is now a habit/worry vicious circle
