duttonv8
Ok i know variations of this question come up all the time but should i go for a better quality second hand shotgun or brand new, my feeling has always been the second hand route, but opinions would be welcome. I have been offered a brand new lincoln o/u m/c with a small dent on the underside of the stock for £500 as shop spoiled. I dont know anything about these guns but it felt quite nice to handle in the shop. I have also been offered a beretta 57el fixed chokes at 1/4 and 1/2 that looks to be in very good condition, it also handled quite well in the shop. I believe this is quite an old gun but i cannot find much info about them on the web does anyone know much about them? I am much more tempted by the beretta but i had thought that i wanted a multi-choke gun in order for it to be more versatile. I plan to use it for a few club level clays and a bit of pigeons / rough if i prefer it to my side by side i will prop get rid of the s/s at a later date (or may just keep both if i feel they both will get used!) Cheers for any ideas Tom Edited November 8, 2011 by duttonv8
BerettaSV10
I don't know the guns you mention, but regarding buying second hand or new I have bought both. You can pick up second hand guns in as new condition, I have sold a gun that had only had a couple of hundred cartridges through it, and bought another the had only been shot twice. The main thing is the gun fit, you can pay a lot of money for a gun that does not fit, which you will regret shortly afterwoods. The other one is you can pick up a second hand one that fits like a glove and you won't want to part with. If you know a experianced shooter that knows about gun fit, take them with you or ask a caoch to go with you as they can check how you are mounting the gun and its fit, although they will probally make a charge for this. duttonv8
I have had shotguns for over 10 years so i am fairly comfortable with the idea of getting a gun that fits and can ***** that fairly well on my own (although i am not an expert and still have a lot to learn). I am more after advice regarding these particular guns and particularly the beretta as i am struggling to find out anything about it. Thank you Tom

Cheers for any ideas Tom Beretta every time, far higher quality gun. The EL is second highest in the range of finishes so it will have some decent timber on it as well. Yes it's 40 or more years old I would think but that means nothing in gun terms. Its value if and when you wish to sell it will also be better. The 56 and 57 series were the predecessors to the 686 and 687 range, they were also sold by Webley as Webley Beretta's. I have handled the Webley version and its a very sweet gun, these were made by Beretta and finished by Webley. Dont worry about multi chokes, most shove 1/4 and 1/2 in and never take them out, they are a device to remove more cash from your pocket. Their benefit IMHO is negligible, you are always thinking do I have the right choke in?. Go fixed choke and shoot what you have and dont worry about it. 1/4 will kill as far as most. Look after it and you will never wear it out. A
