A sanding disc or belt on linisher is probably the best tool to grind them down with, but I have fitted one in the past with a detail sander held in a workmate  . The linisher does give a better finish.

They are more difficult to fit if the end of the stock has a curve, but some pads will form to and retain this shape by hand. It's not necessary to flatten off the end of the butt.

You may be lucky and the screw holes align. If not, then I align the heel almost together so there is about 1 to 2mm to grind off and pushed a small nail through to mark the hole. Always drill a pilot hole first and don't use huge screws. Screw fit the pad with this top screw.

Scribe round the end of the stock and remove to grind the heel to fit. When you're happy with the heel you can use this as a datum when you grind the sides. Keep offering up the pad to the butt (not necessary to screw fit) as you slowly grind each side and toe to ensure a good and accurate fit. Don't be tempted to grind off too much too quick - you can't it stick it back on again if you're too heavy handed!

Drill the bottom screw as per the top one. Screw fix and tighten, job done.

It worked for me anyhoo :good:
