Rosebank22
I am training my dog to retrieve and she is really good in water. I shot a mallard today and was wondering if anyone has made or if it is feasible to make a dummy with the skin of a mallard with all the feathers etc to simulate a more realistic dummy? I know this might need to be in the dog section, but have seen some good replies in this section when it comes to decoys and am hoping someone here will be a wiz with making dog dummies. Any help much appreciated Gary

Spaniel
I have used a frozen duck a couple of times but after a while it does get a bit smelly You could always fix the wings to a canvas dummy if you wanted to, They dont have much probs with ducks its pigeon feathers which are the real problem for the dog to get use to as they come off in thier mouth, When i am doing some cold game retrieves with the lab i have done it in the dark, just so she uses all her senses very impressed with the results, might be worth ago

I agree, have trained a few labs and as i only shoot duck and geese thats what i concentrate on with the dog, just attach the wings with some tape ,just on one end of the dummy and as you get fresh duck you can change them to keep her interested. I managed to get a mallard, and a snipe the other day and have skinned the duck and currently have it covered in 5 kg of cheap salt to see if it will dry the skin and make it useable. Hi rosebank22, I have one of one of the Turner Richard floating duck dummies and a dam good thing they are too,you can do several retrieves before it gets to water logged then just hang it up when you get home and let it dry out for next time,I know they are'nt cheap but they last for years and years and you can share them with your mates if they get a pup, the other I would also add is if you tie the wings onto a standard dummie through the skin and bones they tend to flutter about when it comes down it will keep your pups concetration up. But also does anyone know if I would be allowed to use it on the beach? and with the blanks? I am new to shooting and dont want to run before I can walk and assume I can do it because they are blanks and not live and that it is a dummy launcher not a gun!
