DIY Scarecrow

I was chatting to a farmer friend who also runs a shooting ground and he gave me a handy tip when shooting large fields. He said to use a scarecrow to deter birds from landing at the wrong end to the hide.

However, he's got a different take on it, as he uses white disposable decorator's coveralls!

He uses hazel stakes he cuts in his woods but I've substituted bamboo canes for them. A long cane (6ft plus) is pushed up one leg, through the body into the hood of the coverall leaving sufficient poking out at the bottom of the leg to push into the ground or just shorten the leg material. Another cane is pushed through the outstretched arms and the two canes are fixed together in a cross, he uses baler twine (I've drilled both canes and inserted a piece of wire for quick removal). He puts a few stones in the bottom of the empty leg to weight it and then ties it off. He then places it out in the far end of the field to his hide and reckons it works well. It's lightweight, portable and he rings the changes by hanging an old hi viz waistcoat on it and a bit of string with a CD dangling at each end of the arm cane.

I've blagged a pair of coveralls from the local car bodyshop and I'm just waiting to put my new friend to use.
