Savage 17 HMR

Hi

I'm acquiring a 17hmr - the favourite for the majority seems to be a CZ. I am keen on a 16" barrel.

However, Savage do an equivalent with some sort of 'accu-trigger' which may be an option......

Anyone use a Savage 17 hmr synthetic/stainless and what do you think ? What made this the choice over the all-time favourite CZ?

Cheers

I brought my Savage stainless synthetic (thin barrel) over from the US. It was the featherlight model. I bought it used in the US so I was never considering another gun against it. That said, I've compared it to the CZ and the Marlin as my brother in law was buying a HMR.

Performance wise, all three will shoot well. My savage was a 1" gun to slightly less depending on conditions and could be pushed to 150-175 in some circumstances. My BIL's savage (heavy barrel synthetic) will do the same. The CZ's and Marlins will be in the same ballpark with rifle to rifle variation as important as manufacturer to manufacturer variation. So I wouldn't worry about accuracy.

Triggers are different. I have a marlin trigger in my 22LR which is the same as the current HMR. I had the savage (pre accu trigger) and have shot the accu trigger. I don't know the CZ trigger other than what I've heard here and felt in shops. The accu trigger is a love/hate thing. I didn't find anything special about it. The pre-accu trigger models were poor triggers, but they could be modified easily. Mine was down to a crisp pound and a half with no overtravel and no play or slop. It is easy to do yourself if you are mechanically inclined. The Marlin trigger is the same (though different fixes). I think my marlin trigger is a crisp 2.5 lb, again no slop. That said, both of them needed work to make them nice. From what I understand, the CZ trigger out of the box is pretty nice and a complete nice replacement is available reasonably priced.

Last I knew, the CZ was a bit cheaper than the Savage or Marlin. Given that, there is no reason to pick the Savage over the CZ for me.

Thanks,

Rick

Nice summary, i have been pondering the same as the OP.

They look very nice with the short barrel and i have seen them for a very good price! The only issue i had was the metal magazine (looked quite crude/agricultural) and there dont seem to be 10 shot mags available (not sure if you could use a 22 WMR one? Forum talk seems to suggest a possibility, but no clear confirmation)

I don't know of a 10-shot mag for the saveage. The biggest I have seen is 7. It IS the same amgazine as the WMR, but I'm pretty sure there isn't a WMR magazine that is 10 shots either or else Savage would sell them for the 17 also. My solution was to have 3 magazines. One in each pocket plus one in the gun was more than enough to get me through an evening and meant I didn't have to carry loose cartridges or a box.

thanks

rick
