one short hour, one big rabbit

Went out last night to the same bit of the permission as the last two times ( is just so conveniently on my doorstep :) ) very late at about half nine. Light was already fading and i was really questioning the point of going out at all, but i had had a boring day and some fresh air before bed is always good. Anyway first rain in a while so everything was wet and the first field (previously barren) is now covered in light green shoots. The rabbits were right out in the middle of the field, so i walked up the edge nto expecting much, as i walked they bolted in to the hedgeside, however two stayed two meters of the hedge. I began to stalk in, when i thought i was in range i lay down and took the shot, it was a good sized half grown and i clean missed :(, must have been a dodgy pellet because after it had bolted into the hedge i tool a shot at a clump of mud that was right next to it - the clump got dusted.

However is was a good deal colder yesterday evening than the previous days, and with the gun being CO2, that could have had some effect, maybee my POI has dropped a little, going to rezero this afternoon.

Anyway onwards, to the long grass field, i took one small one as i approached the gate at about 35 yards, very young - however i am here to do pest controll first and foremost. The long wet grass was difficult to stalk in, made harder with the fading light, limiting my vision to about 40 yards.. -.- and my boots squeeking on the grass didnt help, many ran before i had even seen them properly.

I saw a flash of light about 80 yards away and used the scope to identify the movement, a rabbit. Now the last two outings i have seen this rabbit, same time, same spot, and this time i was determined to get her.

I stalked within 40 yards and was going to take the shot, however the miss eariler had nocked my confidence and i was questioning how much CO2 and power i had left, so i stalked in, 5 yards later she bolted.

Walking onwards now to a point where i knew there were some half growns about i was about 25 yards from where the previous rabbit had been when she re emerged, staring off at eachother i raised the gun, and she ran into the hedge again.

Just as i was about to set off she re emerged 30 yards away, still ready i raised the gun and put the crosshairs on the killzone I took my time and slowly squeezed the trigger, THUMM, TWACK!. the pellet hit home in the perfect position and the rabbit dropped on the spot, it wriggled for a bit longer than usual, which i cannot explain as it was the perfect shot with good placement and good expansion and penetration. I called it a night.

Now if there could be a trophy rabbit, this would be mine, this rabbit was Huge the size of some hares ive seen, with an amazing thick clean pelt( tanning when i have some more ) and it wieghed a fair deal. I thought at first such a rabbit much be pregnant, it wasnt. Pie tonight. Didnt have my phone - no pictures :(
