dougzy
Hi, I'm newbie and trying to get into shooting and a .22LR rifle seems to be a good place to start. I'm from Northern Ireland, and there aren't many decent used rifles about the place, so I have been searching the forums and other gun classified websites. When buying a gun from somebody online I understand that it has to be sent from RFD to RFD, but at what stage do you apply for the certificate/variation? Do you apply after buying the gun, or before? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
cant hit rabbits 123
You'll need the appropriate slot to have it entered onto your cert, and may have to prove authority to posess it before you buy it (I think) Otherwise you will either have to pay your RFD to hold the gun untill your variation is completed and your cert returned to you or you will have illegally obtained a firearm you are not authorised to posess. I'll sure I'll be corrected soon if wrong.
dougzy
Thanks for the reply. I've never owned a rifle before, only an air rifle and shotgun. Does this change the situation? Do I still apply for a variation on my certificate in the same way?
SneakyD
Rules are different in northern Ireland, you buy the gun, the seller holds it. You then apply for the variation on your fac. If granted, you go collect your gun. If you are buying from a private seller in Britain you either have to prearrange a contingency in case you don't get approved or buy the gun outright, RFD to RFD then sell it if you don't get approved. Do I still apply for a variation on my certificate in the same way? Just a normal variation, no difference. Though with a rifle they will want to check your land for suitability. cant hit rabbits 123
I bow down to supperiour Knowledge. I did wonder if the system would be different in NI to here (England)

cant hit rabbits 123
Other than handguns, your system is far superior. I think having different certs for shotguns and firearms is very good, but I do wish we could still have hand guns.
dougzy
Thanks for all the help guys. I was also wondering if a rifle moderator occupies the same slot, or has to be applied for separately. What are they checking for in terms of suitability of land too?

dougzy
Would it be better to buy a gun with a sound moderator, or get the gun on first then a mod after?
SneakyD
Would it be better to buy a gun with a sound moderator, or get the gun on first then a mod after? Doesn't matter if you buy them together or separately as long as you put both on the same variation, otherwise you'll have to pay for second variation. It's worth remembering that if you buy them together you have a better chance of negotiating a discount.

dougzy
I've been mainly looking at Tannyoky - it's not that there's a shortage of decent used ones, just that the prices seem higher than in other parts of the UK for the same guns. Do you know of any good dealers tikka?
dougzy
Also, Tannyoky just told me you would need around 100 acres to shoot on - do you really need that much? Has anyone got experience of getting their .22 rifle in Northern Ireland here?

Try Tam Glass outside Ballymena, usually has a good selection of second hand and reasonably priced .22's.
dougzy
I thought it was it was rather excessive. In the email they said "...you also need approx 100 acre’s of land to shoot on or membership of a rifle club" when I specifically inquired about a .22LR gun. Have you got an address for Tam Glass? Would you know if he has any Ruger 10/22s?
