Thunderbird
Now I've got my forend catch plate sorted on the Franchi Falconet it's time to sort the look of the wood. I'm not looking for a work of art, just to get it looking better than it does. I was thinking of just sanding down with a fine grain paper then trying to match the varnish, or do people think I should sand down the whole thing? If so how do I manage the chequering? Churs! Jammer600
If you sand the whole thing you'll struggle to avoide the checkering, sand problem area, mask checkering to avoid the finish filling it up, stain up to near colour and finish as you wish
Thunderbird
I did think that was the easiest way. Thanks.

Wildfowler325
Use nitromorse to remove the old varnish. Rub down after that with a 800 grit paper and oil finish it
