Cosd
Title should read barley not rape! After an epic day yesterday where we shot over 300 woodies on laid barley with Bakerboy, today I went out with another good shooting buddy Topgun66 on a different permission. We couldn't set up where we wanted due to the sun being in our eyes. The problem on the other side was that we couldn't back up to the hedge since there was a shoulder deep ditch running the whole length of the field. We put up a hide in front of the ditch but the birds were very jittery so after a short while we knocked it down and went into the ditch. We kept trying various ways but we just couldn't get the birds to commit to the pattern. We could pull them in for a look but apart from very few they would simply not come down. They were high, fast and furious, and standing so low meant we were shooting upwards most of the time. The shooting was challenging to say the least. Mark did some spectacular shots which were a pleasure to witness. Unfortunately we only had 230 cartridges between us, we shot them all dropping 127 in 5 hours. After a tiring day balancing in a slippery ditch we climbed out sitting on the bank having a coffee before we tidied up. There were birds everywhere and all we could do was watch them. Another great day in the hide with great company, banter and laughter. Thanks Mark for an enjoyable day and also contributing to a very memorable weekend for me. Unfortunately of the 127 dropped we could only find 68 plus a feral: Cos Edited July 22, 2012 by Cosd
