Moderator shim adjustment

Hi guy yestetday I picked up my new kit: Pro-Hunter Mountian M11 .222 with T8AR Mod' and my new to me 391 semi-auto. I'll post pictures next week.

Problem: Jackson Sports sent the wrong Moderator shim that fits up the barrel of the gun (reflex style). My dealer is going to contact them today to see if there is a better size but if not I will have to look at getting it machined.

It is of a plastic nature, not a lot to grip, and need the internal hole slightly opened.

Is this possible for a skilled lathe worker to do?

Is there any thing to look out for??

Regards

Its dead easy first fit the moderator without the bush check that the gap at the rear is the same all the way round or that it is concentric to the barrel. If it’s not concentric when you machine the bush slightly over machine it to allow a slight gap all the way around to prevent the situation of the bush forcing the moderator slightly of line. If that happens you stand the chance of clipping the end of the moderator on the way out.

If the mod is concentric to the bore mark on the barrel where the bush sits. Measure the barrel and machine the bush out to a few thou less then offer it up if it goes on as a very slight interference fit you have a perfect fit. I used an adjustable reamer in the tailstock of the lathe to do the job. It is a 5 min job at the most if you have a well set up workshop.

Thanks Dave. Two quick questions:

1. could you just clarify what you mean in the highlighted bit below, quoted from you reply?

[Measure the barrel and machine the bush out to a few thou less then offer it up if it goes on as a very slight interference fit you have a perfect fit].

2. If the shim is a litter loose, a small space will this make the gun louder??? or the moderator rattle ??

the bushes are machined by the gunsmith whom installs the moderator, a poor fitting bush might give unreliable accuracy as the ressonance might not be consistant, it should not effect sound moderation as the T8/4's are to my knoledge completely self contained and dont use your barrel as part of the moderator.

1.

a. Fit moderator to thread without the bush

b. Mrk with a felt tip pen the barrel at the furthest point the moderator reaches.

c. Masure the width of the bush

d. Devide the bush width by two and then put a spot with your felt tip that distance back towards the muzzle from the first mark. you now have a mark exactly in the middle of where the bush will fit.

e. Measure the width of the barrel with micrometer or vernier caliper at this point.

f. Place bush in lathe chuck and reamer in tail stock antd remove plastic so the hole in the bush is slightly smaller than outer diameter where your mark is.

g Fit the bush to the moderator and screw on. if the bush becomes excessively tight stop and remove slightly more material from the bushe a nice snug fit.

2. When I say leave a slight gap I mean just that a gap and no more it should not touch the barrel at any point but be as tight as it can be to acheive this. This is only if a bad threading job has been done.

Cheers Dave.

I was going to try it myself at the weekend. I have a wood turning lather and some very sharp little tools. However, I just got the name/number of a percision engineer 20mins from my house so I will call him today and see if he will do it. I want it done before Saturday as I am planning to zero it in and shoot a view rounds to run the barrel in (cleaning between round if you know what I mean).

General plub - I took my new 391 to the skeet range on Saturday past WoW! I think my Berretta 682 may now by cashed in to either replace my air rifle or to buy a 6.5x55.

I havn't enjoyed shooting a 12g as much for years. The Berretta 391 Tek...? is really nice, she is cast to suit the left shoulder (great) and very light compared to the 682. But then everyone probably knows that.

I shot 100 birds (4 sets of 25) and was on 80% kills on the last 2 sets of 25. That is the first in years I have taken 80%. I have never done it with the 682. I went into the last 2 stands on the last round with only one bird down and lost 4 birds :good: .

I think I suit a lighter gun and back to 28" barrels. It was funny; the bird I fine easy with the 682 - harder with the 391 and vica-vera.

Crossing birds were easy  Hope I can kep it up on the decoying side of things 80% crows will do me OK.

Nick - no chance getting a 6.5 for foxing. Even getting a 223 next to impossible, that why .222 is the main centre fire for field use here. If I keep enjoying this 391 I will use it for all my 12G shooting. For all the clays I shoot, and it is mostly to give me practice for the field, one good gun that I shoot well with will do, cash the 682 in for something else. I know a farmer who has an old 12g he may give me, so I can keep the same number of guns.

Dave - The mod' shim. I took the moderator and gun to the engineer, boy I'm I glad I didn't try it on the wood lathe! He did a great job, the shim has a little relief around the barrel, just enough not to touch the barrel.

I still haven't fire a shot yet. Roll on Saturday
