chrispti
Sounds like he's unsure and starts treading water. Try the dummy work in shallower water first, so he gets used to picking the dummies out of the water. Keep up the swimming but with out dummies, so he builds his confidence. The 2 will come together in time.
tigger
whatever you do dont chuck the dog in......the other lads are right start off in shallow water and make it a play thing...... Yep agreed you can make a dog water shy in an instant and can take a lot longer to undo than it took to chuck him in....... I get a shallow lake let pup play in the shallows then the following day wade in a little with pup on a lead and little by little increase the depth and while he is on the lead you can keep his head up a little and if he was to panic you can easily help him in to shallower water repeat this day after day and before you no it there swimming my goldies were retrieving from water in a week but take your time don't rush them, another good thing which helps is to take another dog with you which will swim and quite often the pup will follow and build confidence this way but what ever you do DONT THOW THEM IN especially at this time of year as its probably freezing to a small pup as well.....
