topshunt
ok all this has been my first year on pigeons and have had some good and not so good days on the stubble, which the farmer diced and drilled within a matter of days after cutting, and ploughed the rest. So my question is other than harvesting what other times of the year do people believe you can get some good bags. Or is it just a case of keeping an eye out for whats about? thanks all
pigeon pete
yep just keep an eye out ,go early morning at dawn ,then try midday and then at dusk ,all down to weather and were there feeding as well ,but there is no set time , we've been out all sorts of times and not seen them and then seen loads ,if you have and woods or copse then you will get a roost shoot late afternoon
DEADLY PLUMBER
Keep an eye on what the birds are up to. They will finish the stubbles then the drilled fields. Then on to acorns and berrys. If snow comes early they might then hit the rape. The rape is usualy from Feb onwards. They will form large flocks in the winter. A few decoys or a rotary under an oak tree in the autum can be good. In my area they hammer bird tables in urban areas and they know dam well they are safe. Keep an eye on whats happening and act upon it.
alibla
Just been out and checked my shoot 3 ish after a call from the farmer. Loads still on the stubble and beans and they don't spook easily either. Drove onto the field and they just carried on their business !!!! also rape sown 3 weeks ago field almost entirely green due to the good weather and yes quite a few pigeons on it already ! so you just have to go and have a look. He wants me on there now before they get too comfortable
sharkeyes
i like to concentrate on rows of oak or beech when the harder weather arrives as you will often find the woodies gorging themselves on the acorns/nuts , a few decoys placed tight to the trees often pays of
