Grain sealer just makes the wood non-porus, (to a degree) Knotting stops the knotts in wood from leaking resin in climate change. No idea if the knotting in the gun industry is anything like it is in the decorating business? However, as for the decorators stuff. U get clear and dark. It dries very hard so put on with a sponge and use VERY sparingly as dries hard as rock! Don't use a brush, or you'll put too much on and it will be prowd of the surface and be a nightmare to sand down. And it is not porus at all so no other "finish" will penetrate it.
