Red 9R
Can anyone help please, A few weeks ago my 19 month old Lab (Max) was attacked by a springer, since then he is nervous to the point of aggression when any two tone i.e. liver & white, black & white dogs get a bit to close, this happens more when my wife is walking him but has happened when I am out with him, I dont think he would actually get hold of another dog as he is alway a good couple of ft away when barking or chasing but I can't take the chance. So far I have been advised to; put him on a lead and walk him calmly away avoiding confrontation (seems like avoiding the problem to me?), introduce him to dogs he has been going for and pull him up as soon as any aggression is shown, any other ideas,I really want to get this out of him as he is quite a good worker ( thanks to NTTF's fantastic guides and plenty of help) and we have been invited to pick up / beat on a couple of good shoots. In all other aspects he is a really chilled and calm dog, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ian
new to the flock
If it was me I would be lining up 6 to 8 blk &wht/Brn & Wht dogs that I knew were stable and absolutly non dog aggressive. arrange to meet them at 15 minute intervals at the local park...or other convenient location... Intro duce your dog to them one at a time while both dogs are on lead. If your dog shows any sign of aggression correct immediatly. A typical correction would be a clip under the jaw....delivered from below....and a NO command given in a stern voice. If he lunges a solid pop on the lead cuppled with a stern NO...then sit him/ resit him and praise. Continue until he accepts the new dog without any aggressive moves. I would repeat this meeting on a one to one basis until no problems occured meeting 2 to 3 times a week....hence the reason for having to line up so many dogs..... I would then run the same excersise with 2 dogs approaching and continue until he ignored then or showed no signs of aggression. I would also refrain from taking him beating/picking up until I had this problem under control. Good Luck, NTTF
Red 9R
Thanks NTTF I have rung a few people who have patchy dogs to sort out meets, I have already let the shoots know that I have a problem with Max and he may well mis quite a few days if not this year, I will keep training him etc and try to meet as many dogs as we can. Its anoying as I was really pedantic early on to make syure he was socalised with as many dogs as poss, and this one incident has knocked us right back. Thanks again I will let you know how we get on.
Red 9R
NTTF Thanks for the advice it worked a treat. We spent a few weeks meeting as many springers and multi coloured dogs as we could find, a couple of weeks back I thought he was just about as ready as he was going to be so I took him with me beating, he was absolutly fine worked all day with 6 springers and 3 other lab's, he even sat in the back of a Landrover with two springers, when they both tried to climb into the cab using Max as a step he just put his head on my leg and looked at me.. Thanks again Red
