A Little Bit of Luck

I could not resist doing the morning flight this morning despite the moon setting at dawn that would probably mean few birds flighting. I set my decoys up in a very big creek that wigeon and teal often spend the day in . I expected the brisk north wind to male the sea uncomfortable for the duck and they would come into the creek for shelter.

Dawn came up and I only saw one bunch of wigeon that came up behind me and saw me before I saw them. As I expected all the geese were inland , but a singleton came overhead a touch out of shot and as it flew away across the marsh I wondered if I had been wise not to give it a barrel, in retrospect I was glad I did not shoot. 8.00 came and went with no duck seen though the brents were moving big time. Several parties dropped into the decoys and I for one was glad they were protected as they added so much more interest to the morning flight.

About 9.00 I decided it was time to pack up , but as I stood up I noticed a pair of teal sitting in a small side creek 100 behind me. I circled out of my creek to keep below the skyline and creped up on the spot. Of course the teal had seen me and took off just out of range. I walked to the creek edge and a single wigeon jumped off the water 50 yards off. As I swung onto him several more wigeon jumped almost under my feet. A quick shot and the long drake was down , swinging only another drake , he too dropped and finally I shot at a rangey hen bird and she too fell. Its not often I get a triple at duck and to say the least I was very pleased with this one , saving the morning from being a blank. Just to bring me back to earth the first drake was only winged and needed another shot on the water. I missed , twice !!!! but a third shot stopped the diving bird and my dog quickly retrieved all three birds.

So 3 for 3 became 3 for 6 , but it was a happy wildfowler who packed up his decoys and headed for home.
