Pole Star
Need a bit of help on this one ? is planning consent needed to make flight ponds in Scotland ? I have one very wet spot in one of my fields which floods every winter & I have thought about building a shelter bank around it & then fencing it off . Should I just go ahead & do what I want or will require consent ? if any one has any good or bad stories they could share it will be much appreciated . anser2
I think you need to talk to the Environment agency ( or the Scottish version of it ) or SNH about this. There are limits to the size of pond you can dig without consent and there are also restrictions in daming streams to form a pond in England . I would guess you would be OK with a small pond , but you need to check.
Pole Star
Thanks anser2 I just this moment called a shooting farmer friend just over the hill & he was not sure ? the wet patch I have in mind was always a pond even before the land was turned from rough heather & grass to permanent pasture in the 70s & its always turns wet in winter & damp at the height of summer at best but its very exposed & would benefit from a low bank around the edge & then maybe fence it off & allow cover grow to add to the shelter . It would be good nesting cover for many other birds to . Many thanks Pole Star . ps forgot to say anser2 it would be a favorite place for the many Hen Harriers & short eared owls & Merlin's that pass this window where I sit at my computer each day along with the clutches of truly wild Pheasants that pass along the lawn in front of it ! . M ROBSON
I'm sure you don't need planning if the pond is less than 2 feet deep, which most duck ponds will be.
