hornet load

Recommended Posts

Seen as theres a few .22hornet users on here i thorght i would throw this load out there.

10.6grs reloader 7. 40gr hornet sp. 1.728 COL. fedrel gold primer.

Just chucked together and its producing .4in groups consistantly.

Thats shooting out of a rugerM77.

And i accept no liabilty if anyone uses this load.

That's what I had given and was using :) I got two good loads I found that the col didn't improve much unless you Get right to the landz

Single shot

40 grain v max 11.2 grains reloader 7 rem 61/2 primer and ppu brass. I set the col at 1.900

45 grain hornet sp 10.8 grains reloader 7 rem 61/2 primer and ppu brass col 1.750

Both run .5 @ 100 yards

My charge is slightly higher than book but as the cup is below 21000 on both loads ther is plenty pressure spare.

Carnt tell you the fps as I haven't got a crono

Am going to move onto a more modern powder now like lilgun but for a free be and if any is going cheep I wouldn't turn my nose up :good: it was nice to learn with. :)

All the best Karl.

An unusual powder choice with no published data in the calibre that I can find at least. That said its not way out on burn rate, caution might be advised in the absence of published data though. Were did you get the data originally?

I have some if you want it :)

The Lee book gives a max load of 11 grains, and that is compressed .

It is also the last choice in the Lee list of powders, and the slowest velocity at 2260fps (that will probably be from a 24 inch barrel).

But if it's accurate for you carry on, accuracy kills not fast misses.

Neil.

Alliant website Kent. I had a tub of RL7 spare. So i give it to a lad whos just got a hornet and showed him how to work up a load.

No point in him changing an accurate load for one with more fps. well not yet anyway.

Lil gun produces far more velocity at lower pressures than any other powder, I am running 12.5 grn and pushing a 45 grn pill at 2900 fps. Lower pressure means longer brass life and a higher safety margin. Check it out sometime Edited by kent

here is why; 40grn sp 10grn H110 gives 41800 CUP and 2759 fps while the Lil gun is 13 grn @ 2826 fps at only 28 400 CUP! . That's Hogdon data - That's 13800 CUP less pressure for an increase in speed of 100fps. The introduction of Lil gun to the hornet has revolutionised the hand loaded hornet, most powders have start loads equating to that sort of pressure

Ive still got 3lb of h110. Il advise my mate when the tub of RL7 is gone.

I will have a bit off you after Christmas if you can work out a price pm me :good:

It works out better on the lighter loads to use the h110 say for 35 grain ntx which am looking to try out as an alternative to the 40 grain vmax as it won't fit the mag.
