dalef1992
hi people this is my first post also I am new and I don't no my way around the site yet. basically my mum bought a cocker spaniel at 8weeks old (rizzle) he is now 20week (4month) and he only knows how to sit and lay. but only lay if you put a treat in you fist and put it to the floor. he is also very disobedient and likes to dig big holes in the lawn and eat the door frames and shoes regardless of the amount of toys and chews he has. I want to teach him to walk off lead and sit, lay and retrieve on command. I have let him off the lead in the field and got my partner to stand a distance shout him and let him go and then reward him and hold him still. then I'll shout him if he comes running to me I will fuss him and praise him and we repeat this for 10mins he dose have a tendency to get the nose down and then goon a wonder and be disobedient to any command. is there any one in south Yorkshire Rotherham that could help me with training or am I asking too much of the pup at his age. I wouldn't mind training him to the standard of a gun dog as they are very obedient. cheers dale
WGD
Too much for a pup at that age. If he is chewing consider a crate if you can't supervise him. At his age it's not about what he's doing, it's about the habits you are allowing him to get into and what you are allowing him to do. Obedience is not something a 4 month pup understands, it is what he will learn over the coming months through patience, conditioning and reward. Digging is a cocker thing! fenboy
Far too early for serious training , is it a working breed cocker or a show breed , if its the later it will never respond to training as well as the gundog strain. The lay down command is one I have never really seen any point in as long as the dog will sit and stay that should suffice .

ROBLATCH
slow down its a baby let it crawl before walking, i can sympathise you want a good dog for your needs BUT taking things at a fast pace will do the opposite. learning at this age is all about letting him be a pup and playfull, let him have the odd retreive of a sock ,tennis ball etc and show him you appreciate it.dont try and push a weeks work into an hour imo little 10min sprees without sickening him will work more wonders as oppose to trying a weeks work in 1 hr. enjoy him and let him know that !!! the rewards will be second to none
kent
Again its too young to push the hard stuff, make everything fun and don't get into the habit of training in disobedience via issuing commands you cannot enforce. Goal 1, its gotta love coming when called so always reward it when it does - not meaning food every time tone of voice and a tickle etc normally work just fine and if it ever disobeys don't go and beast, it instead try running the other way fast and hide. its all a game and it might be a couple years so at 4mnths don't worry "quick to train - quick to spoil" Edited January 12, 2013 by kent
