danspence2012
hi all, my shoot in devon is putting down ex layers this year, was wondering if we would have to register with defra? we are looking to put down 50 -60 ex layers if numbers matter. penning for a few weeks and release/ let them fly out when they are ready but still have the holes with fox guards on so they can get back in but will encourage on them out to the main estate with our many feeders..aniseed etc any advice would be a good help as its a test really to see if we can hold them..as well as to put back what we take.. waterside
Hi mate, if you can go for ex layers which have never seen the great outdoors yet ie kept back poults which the game farm will raise and use as this years layers. All they know is a pen and they hold very well compared to caught up hens. Feed them high protein pellet on arrival for a week or so then step down to a cheaper pellet for couple of weeks then slowly introduce wheat. Good multi vitamin and plenty of water. CharlieT
Yes you would. Remember though that all you are doing is registering as a poultry keeper, there is no need to notify release.
