lou13
Hi! I'm new to the PW forum and was just wondering about anyones beaters days and how they went? I had mine yesterday...... The first drive was fantastic the last time it was shot so I had high hopes! It was a very challenging drive producing a few high birds, I took a shot at a bird flying across me but I was just behind, typical, whilst reloading a beautiful cock bird soared over my head but I was too slow. Then 6 birds were flushed out at once over my head, as I decided which one to go for I raised the Beretta Silver Pigeon O/U 20G to my cheek and took a shot off, after hitting it with both barrels it quietly glided down into a strip wood 40 yards back ready to be picked later on. The first drive was very successful for the other 6 guns but as for me, just the one! Next was a very dense area of woodland which involved quick overhead snap shooting. I was listening carefully for the birds flushing and aimed on a hen bird that was in full flight over my head and I brought it down 30 or so yards behind me. Shortly after an extremely high hen bird flew over 80 yards up! After giving it a gate of lead I got it with my first barrel, later to be picked. After a few quiet minutes a beautiful Jay flew over the line later to be shot down by me The beaters then emerged from the woodland as a few more birds were flushed then came my last chance a cock bird to my left flying fast, bang! It came tumbling down from my first barrel! The last drive before a short break resulted in me beating! We set off through the woodland however the 2 kids on my right didn't get the message and after shouting for them the whole drive they turned up at the house to find them drinking hot chocolate and eating brownies! Another successful drive added a few more birds to the bag, before a quick warm up in the house by the fire with some hot chocolate! After a break we headed back out into the falling snow. The next drive was an open woodland on top of a hill producing fantastic birds over a team of guns in the field below. I had a tricky peg for this one as the birds were either to my right or left where I had another higher gun on my right and very high birds to my left! Unfortunately this drive resulted in no birds for me however I did let off quite a bit of lead! The final drive of the day was a large woodland with birds coming over an open field and a ride in the woods to a team of guns, the guns for this drive were the ones who had not had much success earlier on, so again I was beating for this drive. The drive was very good with some decent birds getting flushed! We then headed back to the hall for a late lunch! So overall not a bad day with some good opportunities! The total bag was 36 pheasants, 1 woodcock and a jay! Another woodcock however was not successfully picked. So 4 pheasant and a Jay wasn't bad for a very out of practice me! Cant wait for next season now! thanks, lou13
