Spent cartridges have burnt ends!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi folks.

I've just picked up an old belgiun .410 and I've shot a few gamebore 2" cartridges through it and ive noticed the ends of the cartridges are burnt and look melted.. The chamber depth of the gun measures up just a knats chuff short of 3" using a depth gauge. Could this be caused my using too shorter ammo or a very worn gun barrel?

Regards

Syborg.

no, usually its due to slow burning powder not reaching clean burn in the first instance, and could be smouldering on the way through the barrel,

this can toast the crimps, but it could just be the load, or the hull life is seriously spent. are they homeloads?

it doesnt sound like an issue to me, i`ve toasted many a hull.

I was given a box of 410 cartridges with the gun and these looked mint. I think they were Only about 3 months old but I could be wrong. Out of 25 so far 19 have roasted ends. Maybe damp cartridges!

I,ll be buyin more ammo soon so I.ll see. The fun I used is very old and the barrel has definatley seen better days so thought it might be that. Thought it may of been bored

Out from a room gun because the the chambering is stepped in two places. First step is about 2" and next major step is 3".. Baring in mind this old gun must be 60-70 yes old at a guess..

That should of read "rook gun" not room gun lol

Is your gun a hammer gun? My reason for asking is, that if this is the case it may be that new firing pins have been fitted and they are a bit long. They might be piercing the primers. This is noticable in non hammer guns buy the fact that when you close them there is a chance thet they will go off due to the pins protruding through tthe breech face. With hammer guns it is not going to happen until the hammer strikes the pin and forces it through the primer. I had the exact same problem on my Hamer 12 guage which was cured buy the gunsmith filling the firing pins down a bit.

Hi blunderbust, I've had a good look at the primers and there is no sign of puncture, the pin Mark is slightly deeper than my 12g but it could be an illusion as the carts are smaller, I,ll try new ammo first as apparently those particular cartridges had been stored in a garage over this winter..
